The FBI and IRS have launched a sweeping new initiative to investigate nonprofits suspected of funding "domestic terrorism." This operation targets organizations accused of supporting "extreme viewpoints on immigration, radical gender ideology, and anti-American sentiment." These vague definitions are deliberately broad and can encompass virtually any form of dissent against Trump administration policies. Attorney General Pam Bondi ordered law enforcement officials in December to prioritize efforts to probe and prosecute groups deemed "extremist." This initiative is not about genuine national security – it's about silencing opposition and stamping out objections to the administration's autocratic aims. Nonprofits are the backbone of American civil society. They provide essential services, advocate for justice, and give voice to marginalized communities. By labeling legitimate advocacy as "domestic terrorism," the Trump administration is criminalizing dissent, chilling free speech, wasting resources on political opponents, and undermining democracy. We demand that Congress and the Department of Justice immediately halt this initiative, establish clear definitions of domestic terrorism with civil liberties input, conduct oversight hearings, protect nonprofits from viewpoint-based investigations, and revoke the Attorney General's orders targeting "extremist" groups without clear criteria. The American people deserve a government that protects free speech and civil society, not one that uses national security as a weapon against political opposition. This campaign against nonprofits must end now.
