Stop Republican Attacks on Trans Kids

In September, Pres. Biden's Department of Health and Human Services issued a new rule requiring local child welfare agencies to place LGBTQ foster children in “environments free of hostility, mistreatment, or abuse.”

Seems pretty straightforward, right? Surely everyone can agree that foster kids shouldn't be subjected to hostility, mistreatment or abuse.

Not so fast. Apparently treating LGBTQ kids with dignity and respect is a bridge too far for some Republican members of Congress.

Rep. Jim Banks, who is running for Senate, quickly introduced legislation called the Sensible Adoption For Every Home Act that would undermine the rule by preventing foster and adoptive families from being required to affirm a transgender child’s gender identity.

Democratic Senators are fighting back. In a December letter to HHS Secretary Becerra, 19 of them voiced their strong support for the rule.

"The proposed rule will help ensure LGBTQIA+ children in foster care feel safe and valued, and receive appropriate services without discrimination or prejudice," the Senators wrote.
