Stop Media Outlets from Publishing Fake AI Content

The Chicago Sun-Times recently published a summer book list created by artificial intelligence which included books that don’t even exist. This AI-generated article was published with no clear warning to readers that it wasn’t written or vetted by a human journalist.

This kind of careless use of AI in newsrooms erodes public trust in journalism and spreads misinformation. When reputable media outlets blur the lines between real reporting and machine-generated fiction, they put their credibility — and the public’s trust — at risk.

AI can have a role in journalism, but without transparency, editorial oversight, and clear content labels, it becomes a threat to truth. Readers deserve to know when content is AI-generated, and to have confidence that what they’re reading is accurate.

We call on all media organizations to immediately implement safeguards around the use of AI, including disclosure, editorial review, and a firm commitment to journalistic standards.
