The Trump administration is reviving and expanding family separation policies — tearing undocumented parents away from their U.S. citizen children through detention and deportation.

According to recent investigations, the parents of more than 11,000 U.S. citizen children have already been detained. Many of those targeted for deportation in 2025 had no criminal records. ICE is also detaining pregnant, postpartum, and nursing mothers, putting both parents and children in danger. Medical experts and advocates have warned that family separation causes lasting trauma for children, with consequences that can follow them for life.

Some officials are even pushing further. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has previously suggested deporting U.S. citizen children alongside their parents—an alarming attack on both family unity and constitutional rights.

Congress has the power to intervene — through oversight, legislation, and funding restrictions — to end family separation, halt the detention of vulnerable parents, and ensure humane immigration policies that keep families together.
