Stop Cruelty on Factory Farm Transport Trucks

Transport is one of the most stressful times in a farmed animal’s life — and for those who are young, weak, injured, or sick, that suffering can be unbearable. Packed into trucks for days at a time, animals are denied food, water, and rest as they endure sweltering heat in summer and freezing cold in winter. Many collapse from exhaustion, and too many never make it to their destination alive. This cruelty happens every single day — and it’s completely legal.

But Congress can change that.

Representative Dina Titus has introduced the Humane Transport of Farmed Animals Act (H.R. 5286). This long-overdue bill would finally bring oversight and accountability to the transportation of farmed animals in the United States. The legislation directs federal agencies to enforce humane transport standards, inspect vehicles, and prohibit the transport of animals that are too sick, weak, or injured to travel.
Right now, the only federal law meant to protect these animals — the so-called “Twenty-Eight-Hour Law” — is nearly toothless. It requires animals to be unloaded for food, water, and rest after 28 hours of transport, but enforcement is almost nonexistent. In almost two decades, there have been only a handful of investigations.

The Humane Transport of Farmed Animals Act would finally give this law meaning — ending some of the worst suffering animals experience on factory farms and during slaughter transport.
