Stop Blocking Pres. Biden's Judicial Nominees

When Donald Trump was president, Joe Manchin (D-WV) supported more of his judicial nominees than any other Democrat. This was an obvious mistake at the time, helping Donald Trump pack the courts with unqualified MAGA judges who oppose reproductive rights, economic justice and voting rights.

Now, Pres. Biden is working to balance the courts by fulfilling judicial vacancies with qualified nominees who still stand up for working people and marginalized communities.

But instead of voting to confirm Pres. Biden's nominees, Manchin has invented a new standard that is often impossible to meet: Republican support.

In a recent statement, Manchin indicated that he won't support any of Biden's nominees unless at least one Republican also supports them.

“I’m going to be very honest with everybody, if my Democratic colleagues and friends can’t get one Republican vote, don’t count on me," Manchin said. "You can’t make it bipartisan, don’t count on me."

Bipartisanship is good in theory, but there's one huge problem with Manchin's approach. Most Senate Republicans are lockstep in opposition to Pres. Biden's judicial nominees, not because they're unqualified, but because they were nominated by Pres. Biden.

Whether Joe Manchin realizes it or not, his demand for bipartisan support is giving Mitch McConnell veto power over Pres. Biden's judicial nominees, helping anti-choice, anti-worker Republicans maintain control of our nation's courts for years or decades into the future.
