Stop Big Oil's War on Climate Science

For years, Big Oil companies have escaped responsibility while communities paid the price for climate disasters.

Now scientists are developing powerful new tools that can measure how climate change worsened specific heat waves, floods, hurricanes, and other extreme weather events. That research could help communities pursue accountability from the corporations that contributed to climate pollution.

And that's exactly why fossil fuel allies are trying to stop it.

According to recent reporting, political operatives, industry-backed groups, and Republican lawmakers are targeting a major scientific review of climate attribution science before it is even released. Scientists involved with the project have faced pressure campaigns, public attacks, and efforts to comb through their communications.

The timing is no coincidence.

A forthcoming report from the National Academies of Sciences could strengthen the scientific foundation for climate accountability cases. Independent climate science could strengthen efforts to hold polluters accountable for the growing costs of climate-fueled disasters.

The National Academies must not bow to political pressure from fossil fuel interests.

We call on the National Academies to:

• Protect the independence of its climate science review process.

• Reject attempts to intimidate or discredit scientists.

• Release its findings based solely on scientific evidence and peer review.

• Publicly affirm that industry pressure will not influence its conclusions.

Americans deserve the truth about how climate pollution is making disasters more dangerous and costly. Communities suffering from extreme heat, floods, storms, and wildfires deserve science that is free from political interference.

Fossil fuel interests are trying to undermine climate science that could help hold polluters accountable. We can't let them succeed.

Sign the petition: Defend independent climate science and hold polluters accountable.

The petition to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine calls on its leadership to protect the independence of climate science from political interference and industry pressure. As fossil fuel allies and political actors target a major scientific review of climate attribution research, the petition urges the National Academies to stand by its rigorous scientific process and release its findings based solely on the evidence. Communities facing worsening climate disasters deserve honest, independent science that can help inform accountability and public policy.
