At least 26 U.S. senators have financial stakes in the AI data center boom. And they're helping write the rules that could shape its explosive growth. A new Forbes investigation identified at least $7 million in combined investments held by senators in companies tied to data center construction and operation. Five senators have particularly large holdings. Among them is Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, a leading climate advocate whose disclosed investments are valued at an estimated $2.1 million to $8.6 million. Senator Whitehouse is also one of four senators advancing bipartisan legislation to speed permitting for major energy and infrastructure projects — legislation that hundreds of environmental organizations warn would weaken protections for endangered species, clean water, and communities. Why does this matter? Because congressional decisions can affect the fortunes of companies building the AI economy. Lawmakers with substantial investments in those companies have a financial stake in an industry whose future they help shape. There's no evidence Whitehouse or other senators have acted improperly. Whitehouse's office says his investments are independently managed without his involvement. But the potential for conflicts of interest raises serious questions. And the stakes extend far beyond congressional stock portfolios. AI data centers are driving enormous electricity demand. That demand could accelerate clean energy development — or lock communities into decades of additional fossil fuel pollution. Already, companies are turning to natural gas to power expanding data centers. Worse, the AI boom is helping keep aging coal plants running: According to Yale Environment 360, at least 15 U.S. coal plants have had their planned retirements delayed since the beginning of 2025, some indefinitely. Instead of retiring dirty power plants, utilities are citing AI's soaring electricity demand to justify keeping them online. Communities face the prospect of higher electricity bills, increased water demands, air pollution, and pressure to weaken environmental safeguards. Congress is making decisions now that could shape America's climate future for generations. Those decisions must serve the public, not lawmakers' financial interests. We need strong restrictions on congressional stock ownership and trading, including appropriate family holdings. And we need enforceable safeguards requiring AI companies to pay their infrastructure costs, prioritize clean energy, and undergo thorough environmental review. The AI boom cannot become an excuse for more fossil fuel pollution, weaker protections, or financial conflicts in Congress. Please sign the petition demanding that Congress put climate protection and the public interest ahead of private financial gain. The petition to Congress reads: Please pass strong restrictions on congressional stock ownership and trading, including appropriate family holdings. Protect environmental review, require data centers to pay their infrastructure costs, and establish strong clean energy safeguards for AI development. Ensure lawmakers' financial interests never take precedence over the public interest. _______ Source: https://www.forbes.com/sites/kylemullins/2026/10/06/5-senators-with-millions-riding-on-the-ai-data-center-boom/
