In a bold defense of justice and compassion, twenty states and Washington, DC, have filed suit against the Trump administration for withholding critical funds that support victims of crime.

These grants provide lifesaving assistance — from medical care and counseling to emergency shelter and legal support — for people recovering from violence and trauma. But the administration is attempting to hold this funding hostage, demanding states help enforce its cruel immigration agenda or risk losing the resources victims desperately need.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta put it plainly: this is a “brazen attempt” to force states into doing the federal government’s job by threatening their most vulnerable residents. The lawsuit makes clear that protecting survivors should never be contingent on tearing families apart or undermining local protections for immigrant communities.
