Stand With News Outlets Suing Over White House Press Access

CNN, MS NOW, and Politico have filed a federal lawsuit seeking to restore their reporters’ access to the White House after President Donald Trump announced that the three news organizations would be barred from the building.

The outlets say their journalists’ credentials were revoked without notice or an opportunity to challenge the decision. Reporters from all three organizations were subsequently turned away from the White House, including a CNN reporter who said she was informed that her badge had been deactivated.

In their lawsuit, the news organizations argue that the ban violates their reporters’ due-process rights, retaliates against constitutionally protected speech, and infringes on First Amendment protections. They are seeking a temporary restraining order restoring their White House credentials while the case proceeds.

The five members of the White House television pool, ABC News, NBC News, CBS News, Fox News Media, and CNN, also issued a statement saying that the public has an interest in receiving independent information about its government and that administrations should not restrict news organizations because they object to their reporting.
