A million species are at risk — and Trump wants to hand their fate to an “extinction committee.” For 50 years, the Endangered Species Act has served as our strongest tool for preventing animals and plants from disappearing. Ninety-nine percent of species that received protection under the law, including bald eagles, Florida manatees, and grizzly bears, have been spared from extinction. But days after taking office, President Trump invoked a rarely used provision to empower an “extinction committee” — made up of his own appointees — to greenlight projects that could wipe out entire species. His administration is also seeking to rewrite the law so that destroying a species' habitat would no longer constitute "harm" to protected animals. The Trump administration is abandoning our endangered species at a critical moment, when more than a third of animal and plant species in the U.S. are at risk of dying off. This extinction crisis is driven by habitat loss, pollution, and climate change. We need the laws that protect species now more than ever. Join Earthjustice in telling the Trump administration: We need the Endangered Species Act to keep us all healthy and protect our planet. Add your voice before it’s too late.
