In 2020, more than 45,000 people were killed by guns in the United States. The human, physical, emotional, and economic toll of this gun violence is staggering. Still, the federal government has yet to do anything that might stem the bloodshed. Thankfully, states and cities have started to pick up the slack. San Jose, California, for example, just took a novel approach to bringing more safety and accountability to gun ownership by requiring gun owners to carry liability insurance. Just as drivers are required to hold insurance, it makes sense that guns, an item whose sole purpose is to kill, should require insurance as well. Sign the petition and tell your mayor and city council to follow San Jose’s lead and require liability insurance for gun ownership.
