Remove Haley Stevens from the House Democratic Caucus

In a stunning betrayal of everything she has claimed to stand for, Democratic Congresswoman Haley Stevens just endorsed a Trump-aligned Republican for the U.S. Senate.

Just 48 hours before Election Day, Stevens announced she was backing Republican Mike Rogers over Michigan's Democratic Senate nominee, Abdul El-Sayed. After losing the Democratic primary and promising to support the nominee, Stevens turned around and embraced an anti-choice Trump loyalist who would vote against the very policies she has spent her career claiming to support.

Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel slammed the endorsement, saying it “shows that she has abandoned everything she claims to care about.” He declared that Stevens is no longer a member of the Michigan Democratic Party.

Now House Democrats are openly calling for Stevens's removal from their caucus. And they have the power to act: House Democratic Caucus rules prohibit members in good standing from campaigning for candidates outside the Democratic Party and allow members to be expelled by a two-thirds vote.

Mike Rogers has a long anti-choice record, co-sponsored sweeping abortion restrictions, voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and opposed key healthcare protections. 

A Trump ally, Rogers has backed policies that threaten reproductive rights, Medicaid, and affordable healthcare — directly contradicting the priorities Stevens claims to champion.

The question for House Democratic leadership is now whether the caucus will enforce its own rules. Jeffries and Aguilar can initiate a formal discussion of Stevens's status and put the question of her continued membership before their colleagues. Any expulsion would require the necessary caucus vote.
