Pete Hegseth and Trump are bullying kids — and the clock is ticking. They’re trying to erase decades of progress in scouting.

The Pentagon claims it’s close to reaching a final “agreement” with Scouting America that would force them to roll back inclusive policies that welcome girls and LGBTQ+ youth or lose military partnerships. That should alarm every parent, Scout, and supporter of equality. 

A closed-door deal could erase decades of hard-won progress overnight — pushing girls and LGBTQ+ youth back out to satisfy an extremist agenda. That’s why it’s critical that we put pressure on Scouting America to reject Hegseth’s bullying, before it’s too late.

Scouting America chose inclusion because it builds stronger leaders and healthier communities. Thousands of young people finally found a place to belong, serve, and lead. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is trying to undo that by dangling funding and partnerships as leverage. 

When the military threatens children to score ideological points, it sends a chilling message: your identity makes you expendable. And if this tactic works, it won’t stop with Scouts. Any school, nonprofit, or youth program that embraces diversity could be next.

The Scouts have a long tradition of helping young people build and serve community. Bowing to threats from officials who want to tear our communities apart would send a dangerous message to our kids. We need to let Scouting America leadership know that we’re counting on them to do a good turn for all of us.
