Reject Casey Means for Surgeon General

The Senate is moving toward a confirmation vote on Casey Means for U.S. Surgeon General — and we must act now to stop it.

President Trump nominated Means despite the fact that she does not hold an active medical license, is not board-certified, and has said she does not plan to reactivate her license if confirmed. Unlike recent Surgeons General, she has not completed a medical residency and has built her public profile primarily as a wellness influencer, entrepreneur, and author — not as a practicing physician or public health leader.

Equally troubling are her financial conflicts of interest. Reporting from the Associated Press details her ties to wellness and health-tech ventures that could benefit from the national platform and influence of the Surgeon General’s office. Dozens of public health and consumer advocacy organizations, including Public Citizen, have urged senators to reject her nomination, warning that the role demands independence and scientific integrity.

The Surgeon General is the nation’s top public health messenger. This office shapes guidance on vaccines, reproductive health, chronic disease, and emergency response. It must be led by someone grounded in clinical practice, accountable to medical standards, and free from industry entanglements.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee and the full United States Senate have the power to stop this nomination. Senators answer to the public — and public pressure matters. When constituents speak out, votes change.
