Every day, over one million animals are struck and killed by vehicles on U.S. roads alone – that’s 365 million lives lost each year. Among them are beloved grizzlies like Grand Teton’s Grizzly 399, a mother bear who enchanted visitors for decades before a car ended her life on a Wyoming highway. In Florida, over 30 endangered panthers died in 2024, with car strikes as the leading cause, leaving their fragile population teetering on the brink. And in North Carolina, five critically endangered red wolf pups passed after losing their father to a road accident, orphaning them in a wild where fewer than 20 of their kind remain.    

Our roads are tearing apart wildlife families, blocking ancient migration routes, and driving species toward extinction. But we have a solution – and it works.    

Wildlife crossings – overpasses and underpasses – can reduce collisions by over 90%. They give black bears, deer, panthers, wolves, turtles, frogs, and so many other species a safe path to food, water, and mates. All while protecting drivers from the heartbreak and cost of collisions – Americans spend $10 billion annually repairing wildlife-vehicle collision damage.    

The Stakes Are High: 

5 million miles of roads fragment North America’s landscapes, with more added every year.    

$350 million in U.S. federal funding was set aside for wildlife crossings in 2021 – but that funding needs renewal in 2026.
