Meta's AI chatbot and companions are being used by children and teens—even though they pose real, well-documented dangers to kids—in Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, and in its own app. There's no way to turn it off and no way to see your child's conversations with the chatbot. New research from Common Sense Media found that Meta AI actively helps teens plan harmful activities. Instead of redirecting dangerous conversations, Meta AI has been shown to participate in conversations that cover planning joint suicide, illegal drug use, and cyberbullying campaigns against other students. That's why we're calling on Meta to immediately: ● Prevent young people under 18 from engaging with its chatbot. ● For users regardless of age, implement effective safeguards that prevent harmful behavior—including cyberbullying, self-harm, and encouraging users to hurt others. ● If Meta does not turn off access to Meta AI for all under-18 accounts, establish controls that allow teens to turn off Meta AI in Meta products, including Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, and add parental controls that allow parents to turn off and supervise use of Meta AI in Teen Accounts. Young people deserve digital spaces that are safe, respectful, and age-appropriate—not environments that exploit their emotions or expose them to harm. Please sign our petition urging Meta to protect our kids. /// Meta: Research by Common Sense Media shows that your AI tool poses unacceptable risks to children and teens under age 18 and should not be used by minors. Therefore, we ask that you protect these vulnerable users and ensure that no one under 18 can access your products. Controls should be implemented immediately that allow users to turn off Meta AI in Meta products, including Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, and add parental controls that allow parents to turn off and supervise use of Meta AI in Teen Accounts. Finally, Meta must implement safeguards that actively prevent harmful behavior to users and encourage users to reach out to family, friends, or mental health professionals. Please do the right thing and put kids' safety first.
