Protect Climate Groups From Trump’s Political Retaliation

President Trump is escalating his campaign against environmental organizations–and now, he is threatening their very existence.

Multiple reports indicate that the Trump administration is exploring ways to revoke the tax-exempt status of nonprofit groups working to combat climate change. Trump has openly accused climate and clean energy organizations of being part of a “scam.” Now, reports confirm that White House officials are weighing actions that could strip these groups of their nonprofit status—purely for engaging in climate advocacy.

This is a dangerous abuse of power. Environmental nonprofits are essential public service organizations. They educate communities, shape evidence-based policy, and mobilize citizens to protect our shared future. Their tax-exempt status isn’t a privilege, it is a legal safeguard that ensures civil society can flourish, free from political intimidation.

Revoking nonprofit status based on viewpoint is a direct assault on the First Amendment. If Trump’s attack on these organizations is not struck down, legal experts warn it would set a chilling precedent: that dissent on government climate policy could become grounds for financial and legal retaliation.

This isn’t just an attack on environmental groups—it’s a threat to all nonprofits that challenge powerful interests. If Trump can silence climate organizations today, who will be next?

Sign the petition to demand that the Trump Administration halt any efforts to weaponize the IRS against environmental organizations and to call on Congress, the courts, and the American people to stand firm against these authoritarian tactics.

Protecting our climate should never be grounds for punishment. In the face of a mounting climate crisis, we need stronger advocacy–not more suppression.
