Protect Birds: Pass the Federal Bird Safe Buildings Act

Up to 1 billion birds are killed annually by collisions with glass windows and buildings in the US. Migratory songbirds, raptors, and even endangered species are being lost at alarming rates because our built environment isn’t designed with them in mind.

By making simple changes, newly-introduced legislation will help protect migrating birds from dying unnecessary, preventable deaths.

The Federal Bird Safe Buildings Act (H.R. 3268) offers a commonsense, cost-neutral solution. This bipartisan legislation would require federal buildings to use bird-friendly design practices—like patterned glass, simple window treatments, and adjusted lighting—that are proven to reduce deadly collisions.

Bird-friendly design isn’t just good for wildlife; it’s good for people and the planet too. Many of these measures also help make buildings more energy efficient—cutting down on glare, reducing heat loss, and lowering utility bills. From retrofitting existing federal buildings to ensuring new construction follows bird-safe standards, the solutions are innovative, affordable, and effective.

Across the country, cities and states have already implemented similar measures with great success. But with thousands of federal buildings nationwide, Congress has the power to set an example and make a real difference for bird conservation at the national level.

This will help to address a staggering problem. Bird populations in North America have already declined by nearly 3 billion since 1970. By passing H.R. 3268, Congress can address one of the largest human-caused threats to birds and help prevent further declines.

Please sign the petition to tell Congress to support the Federal Bird Safe Buildings Act of 2025 and cosponsor this vital, forward-thinking legislation.
