Petition: Thank the Times for Defending Press Freedom

The New York Times deserves credit for standing up to the Pentagon’s escalating restrictions on journalists and challenging them in court. As Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth pushes policies limiting press access and controlling how reporters can cover the military, the Times has chosen to fight back rather than quietly accept new barriers to accountability. In moments like this, defending press freedom matters.

These restrictions are not just administrative changes—they threaten the public’s ability to independently understand military actions, especially during an ongoing conflict with Iran. When reporters lose access, the government gains greater control over the narrative surrounding war, civilian harm, and national security decisions. A free press cannot function if access depends on political approval.

We thank The New York Times for resisting these efforts and defending the principle that journalists must be able to question power freely. News organizations should not accommodate restrictions designed to weaken scrutiny and silence independent reporting. Democracy depends on a press willing to stand up to government intimidation—especially in times of war.
