The New York Times publisher’s public rebuke of CBS News for appearing to align itself with Donald Trump is an important reminder that media organizations do not have to surrender to political intimidation. At a moment when powerful figures are pressuring news outlets to soften coverage, limit criticism, or avoid confrontation, standing firm in defense of independent journalism matters more than ever. Yet too many major media companies have responded to Trump’s attacks with caution, accommodation, or silence—especially when faced with legal threats, regulatory pressure, or corporate concerns. When news organizations appear willing to bend under political pressure, it weakens public trust and signals that powerful leaders can influence coverage through intimidation rather than facts. We call on major news organizations to follow the example of those willing to push back and defend editorial independence openly and unapologetically. Journalism cannot serve the public if it prioritizes appeasing politicians over holding them accountable. The press must stand together against efforts to pressure, silence, or manipulate independent reporting.
