Petition: Media Must Call Trump's Cook Crusade Lawbreaking

A federal court blocked Trump from firing Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook while her lawsuit was pending. The Supreme Court, in a 5-4 ruling in late June, upheld that decision against a direct challenge from the president. This week, Trump did it anyway — sending Cook a letter claiming "sufficient reason to believe" she made false statements on mortgage agreements, the same baseless allegations his allies floated when he first tried to remove her a year ago. Cook has denied the charges. Her attorney called the allegations "as baseless now as they were a year ago." The unproven mortgage fraud claims were invented by a Trump political appointee and have never been tested in any court. Trump is not pursuing justice. He is pursuing a Black woman who holds a seat he wants to control in order to pressure the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates for his own political benefit.

This is not a legal gray area. A court order exists. The Supreme Court upheld it. Trump is defying both — dressing his contempt for the rule of law in bureaucratic language and a three-week response deadline, betting the media will cover it as a process story rather than what it is.

We call on the media to cover Trump's renewed effort to remove Lisa Cook not as a "White House considering firing" story, but as a willful defiance of court orders and an assault on the independence of the Federal Reserve. The public deserves reporting that uses plain language: this president is breaking the law, again, in plain sight.
