Recent reporting reveals that aggressive ICE and DHS enforcement actions—including widespread arrests, racial profiling of U.S. citizens and lawful residents, and fatal shootings by ICE agents—are happening in communities across the country. These are not isolated “immigration enforcement” incidents; they are systemic practices with deep implications for civil rights, public safety, and constitutional protections. Yet much of the American mainstream press still treats these events as routine enforcement stories, buried in crime desks or framed as partisan controversy. This obscures the human toll: people of color being stopped and detained without clear cause, legal residents terrified to go about daily life, and U.S. citizens suffering violence, wrongful detention, and death by law enforcement. We call on major U.S. news organizations to cover ICE’s actions with force and clarity—placing them at the center of national security, civil rights, and democracy beats; exposing patterns of racial profiling and constitutional abuse; and holding both enforcement agencies and political leaders accountable. The public deserves reporting that fully reflects the gravity of these practices and the rights at stake.
