Pass the Tariff Refund Act — Return $175B to consumers

The Supreme Court has ruled that President Trump’s sweeping tariffs were illegally imposed. But American families are still stuck paying the bill.

For more than a year, these tariffs drove up prices on everyday goods — from groceries to school supplies to electronics. Businesses passed the costs on to consumers, and working families felt it at the checkout counter. 

Lawmakers estimate the average family paid about $1,700 more last year because of these price hikes. In total, roughly $175 billion was collected under a tariff regime the Court has now declared unlawful.

That money belongs back in the hands of the people who paid it.

This is about fairness and accountability. When the government imposes an illegal tax, it must make the public whole. Families struggling with high costs cannot afford to wait years for relief while Washington delays.

The Tariff Refund Act would require the federal government to return unlawfully collected tariff revenue and prioritize small businesses and consumers who bore the brunt of these costs. Passing it would send a clear message: no president is above the law, and working people will not be left holding the bag.
