Since 1980, the number of women imprisoned in the United States has increased more than 700 percent. And since three-fourths of those women are of childbearing age, the number of pregnant women in prison has increased dramatically as well. That’s why Rep. Ayanna Pressley recently introduced the Justice for Incarcerated Moms Act. This crucial and life-saving legislation would end the practice of shackling pregnant women, promote mental health programs for incarcerated women, and fund a study to better understand the health consequences of incarcerating pregnant women. Tell Congress: Pass the Justice for Incarcerated Moms Act.
