New Report: Climate Action Pays $15 for Every $1

Republicans in Congress and other opponents of climate action have spent years warning that cutting pollution costs too much.

The numbers say the opposite.

A major new United Nations assessment finds that for every $1 invested in tackling climate change and air pollution together, the world could gain roughly $15 in economic benefits.

A fifteen-to-one return is the kind of payoff even Wall Street would struggle to match. Yet when the investment is clean energy, cleaner air, and a safer climate, opponents suddenly call it too expensive.

Even counting only direct market benefits — including lower health care costs, greater worker productivity, and avoided physical damage — the return is still about $4 for every dollar invested. The report calculates an overall internal rate of return of 60%, with market benefits alone exceeding the costs of action within a decade.

Meanwhile, the cost of doing nothing keeps climbing.

Every year of delay could mean forfeiting more than $1.5 trillion in economic and health benefits worldwide. Yet opponents of climate action continue to use “cost” as an excuse to defend the status quo — more fossil fuel dependence, more pollution, and more delay.

That argument doesn’t add up.

Congress should invest aggressively in clean energy, energy efficiency, methane reductions, cleaner transportation, and other proven climate and clean-air solutions. These investments can cut pollution while lowering health costs, boosting productivity, preventing costly damage, and helping protect our economy from a worsening climate crisis.

We can keep paying the mounting costs of dirty air and climate change — or invest now in solutions that can pay us back many times over.

Please sign the petition telling Congress to stop using cost as an excuse for climate inaction and start investing in solutions that strengthen our economy and protect our future.

The petition to Congress reads: A new United Nations assessment finds that investing in climate and clean-air solutions can return roughly $15 in economic benefits for every $1 spent, with substantial gains from lower health costs, increased productivity, and avoided damage. Congress must act on those findings by investing in proven clean-energy, efficiency, transportation, methane-reduction, and other pollution-cutting measures. Climate action can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and harmful air pollution while delivering significant economic benefits — and delaying those investments only increases the costs.
