Media Must Hold Trump Admin Accountable Over Pretti Death

The fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis—captured on video that contradicts the administration’s official narrative—raises urgent questions about the conduct of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement. While federal officials insisted Pretti posed a threat, multiple eyewitness-recorded videos show he was holding a phone, not brandishing a weapon, when he was shot by Border Patrol officers during an ICE-led operation.

Despite this clear evidence, senior administration figures have doubled down on misleading accounts and sought to defend ICE’s actions rather than confront the contradictions. This failure to reckon with the factual record undermines public trust, impedes accountability, and allows misleading government narratives to go unchallenged.

We call on mainstream media outlets to sustain pressure on the Trump administration by continuing to scrutinize and report on the government’s handling of the Pretti killing; by confronting misleading statements with facts and evidence; and by demanding transparent, independent investigations into ICE and DHS conduct. The public deserves journalism that holds power to account—especially when official narratives conflict with what the evidence shows.
