A Newsmax host recently urged Texas Republicans to “escort” Democratic lawmakers back to the precinct and “lock them all up,” praising law enforcement’s threat to arrest them for fleeing the state in protest. This rhetoric normalizes punishing political dissent and undermines democratic norms. Media outlets must not treat calls for jailing lawmakers as entertainment. We demand that journalists call it what it is: authoritarian intimidation, not political theater.
