Big tech companies are racing to build massive data centers—spanning millions of square feet—and gobbling up energy and water in the process. Communities are being blindsided. Local officials are locked into secret NDAs; residents only learn when construction is nearly done. 

These data centers strain power grids, drive up utility costs, and funnel environmental harms into vulnerable regions—especially when the public is kept in the dark. 

Newsrooms must stop treating data center expansion as a neutral tech story. Instead, they must go over the risks, expose secrecy, and elevate affected voices.
