Media Must Cover Trump's Midterm Sabotage as a Crisis

Trump invited Tina Peters — a woman convicted of election tampering and sentenced to nine years in prison — to the Oval Office this week to discuss "midterm plans." Peters found no fraud during her Colorado county clerk tenure; she was jailed for sabotaging the very election system she was trusted to protect. Trump pardoned her, praised her, and is now taking her election conspiracy theories into official White House strategy sessions with four weeks until Election Day.

This is not an isolated meeting. The Trump administration has already seized 2020 ballots from a Fulton County election warehouse, sued 30 states for unredacted voter data, threatened election officials with federal prosecution, and directed the Postal Service to shut down mail balloting nationwide. In Georgia, the state election board's own executive director sent unauthorized letters to the DOJ and DHS demanding last-minute changes to voting equipment — two board members said they never approved them. Legal experts describe the Fulton County ballot seizure as the action that worries them most: a small number of federal agents could call election results into question with no public oversight.

We call on the media to cover Trump's pattern of election interference not as a series of political stories, but as a coordinated campaign to sabotage the midterms. A president who meets with convicted election fraudsters, seizes ballots, and threatens officials is not protecting election integrity — he is attacking it. The public deserves reporting that names that threat before November, not after.
