Media Must Cover Missouri Maps as GOP Election Rigging

Missouri Republicans — at Trump's direction — redrew congressional maps mid-decade to push a Democratic incumbent out and lock in Republican House seats. The Missouri Supreme Court blocked it unanimously, 7-0, with a majority of Republican-appointed justices. The U.S. Supreme Court backed that ruling twice. The state's secretary of state was held in contempt for defying it. None of that stopped the Eighth Circuit from reinstating the gerrymandered maps anyway — creating chaos so severe that local election officials haven't received updated instructions while absentee ballots are already going out.

This is not a redistricting dispute. It is a coordinated attempt to override courts, voters, and the rule of law to rig congressional elections. Missouri voters rejected two separate Republican power grabs in August by margins of 80 and 83 percent. A national poll shows majorities of Democrats, Republicans, and independents all want mid-decade redistricting banned. The public has been clear. Republicans, backed by the White House, simply refuse to listen.

We call on the media to cover Missouri's redistricting chaos not as a legal procedural story, but as what it is: the Trump administration trying to gerrymander its way to a congressional majority — losing in court, losing with voters, and creating election chaos in the process. The public deserves reporting that names the intent before Election Day, not after.
