Media Must Cover ICE’s NYC Shooting as Reckless Violence

Yesterday afternoon in Manhattan’s Marble Hill neighborhood, just as a nearby school was letting out, ICE agents — at least one posing as a construction worker in a high-visibility vest — surrounded a man in his car and shot him. A five-year-old child was in the vehicle. The child was physically unharmed. The victim is alive. ICE has not responded to questions. This is at least the 25th person shot by federal immigration agents this year — in a residential neighborhood, in plain clothes, outside a school, with a child in the car.

This is not an isolated incident requiring routine coverage. ICE agents have now shot 25 people in 2026. They routinely operate in disguise. They have killed people during mistaken-identity vehicle stops. They have shot a DoorDash driver in the back. They have left eyewitnesses in detention. And now they have opened fire steps from a school dismissal, next to a five-year-old. The agency has not explained a single one of these shootings to the public’s satisfaction.

We call on the media to cover ICE’s pattern of shootings not as a series of isolated law enforcement incidents, but as what it plainly is: an agency operating without accountability, in disguise, in American neighborhoods, shooting people at a historic rate. The public deserves reporting that connects every one of these 25 shootings into the single damning story they form.
