A new study by Dartmouth College researchers reveals that the world's biggest companies have caused a shocking $28 trillion in climate damage. More than half of that total came from just 10 of the world’s biggest fossil fuel companies. These companies have knowingly driven the climate crisis, while communities around the world suffer the consequences: wildfires, deadly heat waves, floods, and devastating storms. It is only fair that they be held financially responsible for the destruction they have caused. Congress can help hold these polluting companies accountable by swiftly passing the Polluters Pay Climate Fund Act but GOP Leadership is not treating this as a priority and the legislation is stalled in committee. Corporations like ExxonMobil, Chevron, BP, Shell and several other large oil and gas companies are causing massive damage while enriching themselves. Without action from Congress, they can continue to do so without consequence. Passing the Polluters Pay Climate Fund Act is common sense in a just society. It would force the worst climate offenders to pay into a fund that would help communities adapt to the escalating climate disasters and recover from the harm they’ve already endured. If GOP Congressional Leadership kills this bill, the damage total will continue to grow and future generations will be left to foot the bill. Congress has a historic opportunity to shift the burden back where it belongs: onto the polluters who knowingly fueled this crisis. Sign the petition to call on GOP Congressional Leadership to stand with people, not the polluters, by passing the Polluters Pay Climate Fund Act and making Big Oil finally pay for the devastation they have caused. https://apnews.com/article/climate-change-liability-lawsuits-damage-trillions-5ad21e47b2aa16cc90cb7669f56297f1 Photo credit Flickr user arbyreed used under CC 2.0
