Cutting emissions alone is not enough to meet our climate goals. Carbon removal means pulling carbon dioxide out of the air and storing it, using everything from healthy soils to new technology. By mid-century, the world will need to remove 5 to 10 billion tons of carbon dioxide every year to reach our goal of net-zero emissions. Carbon removal won’t reach that scale on its own. It takes effective federal policy, and good policy starts with the people who are most affected by carbon removal projects and with the best available science. That’s why Carbon180 spent the last year building "Road to 2030", a set of policy roadmaps informed by communities and those who will run these projects. They give lawmakers clear, near-term priorities when the new Congress takes office in January 2027. No matter who wins next week’s election, our roadmaps give Congress a place to start. Without a plan built with communities, carbon removal could grow too slowly to reduce the impacts of climate change, or grow in a way that is not accountable to carbon removal standards or harms the communities asked to host carbon removal projects. Sign the pledge to tell Congress that carbon removal belongs on the 2027 agenda.
