Investigate This Abuse of the Pardon Power

The presidential pardon power was never meant to let powerful insiders escape accountability. But as ProPublica reports, President Donald Trump pardoned Joseph Schwartz, who admitted to withholding $39 million in employee payroll taxes from his nursing home business and diverting those funds elsewhere.

Payroll taxes aren’t optional — they fund Social Security and Medicare, programs millions of Americans rely on. When that money is withheld, it’s not just a bookkeeping issue — it’s a direct hit to workers and taxpayers.

Schwartz’s legal team argued the funds were used to keep his company afloat. But for everyday Americans, the rules are clear: if you don’t pay what you owe, there are consequences. That’s why this pardon raises such serious concerns about fairness and accountability. It reinforces a growing fear that there are two systems of justice in America — one for ordinary people, and another for those with wealth, access, and political connections.

Congress cannot ignore this. Lawmakers must launch a full investigation into this pardon, examine whether proper procedures were followed, and determine whether presidential powers are being used to shield insiders from consequences.

Add your name to demand Congress investigate this pardon and hold leaders accountable for any abuse of power.

If powerful individuals can avoid consequences while everyone else plays by the rules, trust in our system collapses. It’s time to stand up for fairness, accountability, and a government that works for everyone — not just the well-connected.
