Investigate Political Interference at the IRS

The Trump administration is trying to turn the IRS into a political weapon.

Senate Democrats are demanding answers after reports that Kenneth Kies, a top Treasury and IRS official, was forced out after warning the White House about potential illegal interference in tax audits. 

Federal law bars presidents and other senior officials from pressuring the IRS to start or stop audits of specific taxpayers. If White House officials crossed that line, the public deserves to know.

Tell Acting Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration Heather M. Hill: "Launch an immediate independent investigation into political interference at the IRS."

Senate Democrats are also investigating whether Frank Bisignano, who has been running IRS operations while also serving as Social Security commissioner, misled Congress and the public about the agency’s staffing crisis after massive Trump administration cuts.

The IRS reportedly pushed out or lost nearly 30,000 workers last year — more than a fourth of its staff — and is now scrambling to hire thousands more. That matters because a weakened IRS makes it harder to serve ordinary taxpayers, enforce the law fairly, and hold wealthy tax cheats accountable.

The IRS has enormous power over every taxpayer in America. If that power can be used to punish political enemies, protect allies, or shield powerful people from accountability, the rule of law is in danger.
