Impeach Trump for Illegal Actions in Venezuela

The White House launched military strikes inside Venezuela, announced the detention of a foreign head of state, and suggested the United States would oversee Venezuela’s future — all without congressional authorization. No debate. No vote. No transparency. This is an alarming escalation of executive power and a direct threat to democratic accountability.

We call on Democratic members of Congress to immediately introduce articles of impeachment related to the Venezuela operation.

The Constitution grants Congress — not the president — the sole authority to authorize war. Yet this administration initiated military action, detained a sitting president, and pushed toward regime change without legal approval. If Congress allows this to stand, it effectively surrenders its most fundamental power and opens the door to endless unilateral wars.

The consequences are already unfolding. The United Nations has warned that the operation risks destabilizing the region and harming civilians. At the same time, emergency meetings of the UN Security Council underscored the global alarm over the legality of the strikes. Major U.S. outlets report that even administration officials have struggled to clearly articulate the legal basis for the operation or for Maduro’s continued detention.

Legal experts and democracy advocates have warned that bypassing Congress in this way represents a grave abuse of power with long-term consequences. History shows that when Congress fails to confront executive overreach, it becomes normalized.

Impeachment exists precisely for moments like this. When a president defies constitutional limits, violates international law, and risks war without consent, Congress has a duty to respond.
