Climate change is rearing its ugly head this year, with record heat, devastating flooding and out-of-control wildfires disrupting hundreds of millions of people’s lives. Now, a group of progressive United States Senators is calling on the Department of Justice to fight back by holding fossil fuel companies accountable. In a letter from Senators Sanders, Markey, Warren and Merkley to Attorney General Merrick Garland, the senators are demanding civil action in response to the fossil fuel industry’s decades-long attempt to mislead the American people about the role fossil fuels play in climate change. “The actions of ExxonMobil, Shell, and potentially other fossil fuel companies represent a clear violation of federal racketeering laws, truth in advertising laws, consumer protection laws, and potentially other laws, and the Department must act swiftly to hold them accountable for their unlawful actions,” the senators wrote. Add your name to the petition calling on the Department of Justice to hold fossil fuel companies accountable.
