Deforestation, agricultural expansion, and human encroachment destroy their homes, leaving them without the food and shelter they need to survive. The shrinking forests also put them at greater risk of conflict with humans and exposure to ruthless poachers. With their habitats disappearing, the social structures and genetic diversity critical to their survival are breaking down. The threat is urgent—but we can still change the course of their future.

Both gorilla species are now critically endangered, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and without immediate intervention, their future hangs in the balance. The situation is especially dire for Cross River gorillas—fewer than 300 remain in the wild, making them the most threatened ape in Africa. 

At the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), we are taking decisive action to protect these majestic animals. We work hand-in-hand with local communities to promote sustainable practices that safeguard their forest homes. And together with national governments and logging companies, we are advancing better land-use planning to preserve these ecosystems for future generations. But we can't do it alone.
