It’s no secret that fossil fuels are fueling climate change and threatening public health. Yet, while the impacts grow more severe, the U.S. government continues to subsidize the oil industry with billions of taxpayer dollars each year. These subsidies not only enrich the very companies responsible for climate change but also distort the market, keeping us locked into a system that prioritizes corporate profits over our planet and people. Oil subsidies allow oil companies to significantly lower their tax liabilities, costing taxpayers billions annually. These breaks enable companies to report less income, pay fewer taxes, and continue to pollute without facing the true costs of their environmental damage. In fact, as much as 40% of oil from the Permian Basin wouldn't be profitable without these subsidies, creating an illusion that fossil fuels are the cheaper option.[1] This isn’t just an environmental issue; it’s a matter of justice. Communities near oil fields, refineries, and pipelines face health risks from toxic pollutants, while corporations reap the rewards. By maintaining these subsidies, Congress is allowing Big Oil to dictate our energy future rather than supporting the transition to clean, renewable energy sources. We need to redirect our resources toward sustainable energy solutions that prioritize public health and protect our environment. Countries like Sweden have successfully implemented carbon taxes that reduce emissions while maintaining economic growth. It's time for Congress to follow suit and hold oil companies accountable for the destruction they cause. Add your name to demand Congress end these subsidies now! It’s time to put people over profits and pave the way for a cleaner, healthier future. --- Footnotes: 1. https://legacy-assets.eenews.net/open_files/assets/2017/10/02/document_gw_01.pdf
