FBI: Protect Climate Activists from Hacking and Threats

Recent events reveal a disturbing trend of targeted harassment of climate activists. According to Reuters, an ExxonMobil lobbyist is under investigation for allegedly orchestrating the hacking and leaking of private emails from climate activists. This invasive and unlawful act exposed activists’ communications, disrupted their work, and put their safety at risk. 

The activists’ emails were reportedly used to discredit and intimidate environmental advocates, demonstrating how corporate interests are weaponizing illegal tactics to undermine efforts to combat climate change.  

The consequences of such actions extend far beyond a breach of privacy. The hacking creates a chilling effect, discouraging citizens from engaging in activism due to fear of retaliation. This is compounded by other forms of harassment, such as those faced by activists opposing the Mountain Valley Pipeline. Peaceful protesters have experienced arrests, harassment, and physical danger for standing up against environmentally destructive projects.  

The FBI has both the authority and responsibility to address these escalating threats. With Trump’s nomination of Kash Patel-who has pledged to prosecute journalists and others on his enemies list-to lead the agency, it is critical that the current leadership act now, before he takes the reins.

Sign the petition to call on the FBI to:  

1. Prioritize Investigations into Hacking and Cyber Attacks:  Thoroughly investigate and hold accountable those responsible for hacking and leaking activists’ private communications, including individuals with ties to powerful corporations.  

2. Ensure Justice for Targeted Activists: Allocate resources to investigate all threats, harassment, and violence against climate advocates, ensuring that perpetrators are prosecuted to the full extent of the law.  

3. Enhance Protections for Advocacy Work: Collaborate with local law enforcement to establish clear protocols for safeguarding activists’ rights and ensure training for officers on the appropriate handling of environmental protests.  

4. Condemn and Prevent Corporate Overreach: Take a strong stance against the misuse of corporate influence to incite or enable criminal acts, including cyberattacks, aimed at silencing dissent.  

The ability to advocate for climate action is fundamental to a healthy democracy and the fight against the climate crisis. When activists are subjected to hacking, surveillance, and physical threats, their work—and their safety—are undermined. By prioritizing the protection of climate advocates, the FBI can demonstrate its commitment to upholding constitutional rights and protecting the most vulnerable from abuse.
