Don’t Let Trump Weaponize the Census Against Voters

Donald Trump is using a brand new and deeply flawed analysis of Census data to claim tens of thousands of noncitizens voted illegally — and to demand new restrictions on American voters.

But we’ve seen this before. A ProPublica investigation found that the Trump administration’s broader hunt for noncitizen voters relied on data matching that career officials warned could generate huge numbers of false positives.

When investigators checked those leads, the claims fell apart. But that hasn’t stopped Trump from leaning on Congress to restrict our freedom to vote. Now it’s our turn to fight back.

When ProPublica reviewed Trump’s claims, they found that fewer than 150 alleged noncitizen voters were referred for prosecution between January 2025 and May 2026, and only 41 were charged with election-related crimes. Investigators encountered bad matches, actual citizens, and people who had never voted.

Now, Trump is trying the same playbook: take questionable government data, inflate what it proves, and use the resulting scare story to make voting harder.

Our freedom to vote is too important to be rewritten around unreliable database matches and exaggerated claims of fraud. Eligible Americans should not face new barriers to the ballot because Trump wants the data to fit a political narrative.

Congress should reject attempts to weaponize this analysis, protect eligible voters from wrongful purges, and refuse to advance legislation built on claims that outside reporting has shown are deeply unreliable.
