Donald Trump is trying to drag the World Bank backward — and the consequences could be devastating for millions of people already living on the front lines of the climate crisis. The World Bank is supposed to help fight poverty and support sustainable development around the world. In recent years, that has included a major climate commitment: directing 45% of its annual financing toward climate-related projects that help countries build clean energy, prepare for floods and droughts, protect food and water supplies, and respond to disasters made worse by global warming. But now, Trump’s administration is reportedly pushing the World Bank to weaken or abandon that climate target — and to open the door wider for fossil fuel projects. That is exactly the wrong direction. Communities across the globe are already suffering from deadly heat, crop failures, stronger storms, water shortages, and rising seas. Many of the countries that rely on World Bank support have contributed the least to the climate crisis, but are being hit first and worst by its impacts. They do not need more oil and gas dependence. They need responsible clean energy, climate resilience, and investments that protect people’s health, homes, and futures. If the World Bank caves to Trump’s pressure, it would send a dangerous signal to other global lenders that fossil fuel politics matter more than science, justice, and survival. It would also undermine the Bank’s own mission of ending poverty on a livable planet. World Bank President Ajay Banga and the World Bank Board must stand firm. They cannot let Trump and his fossil fuel allies turn one of the world’s most important development institutions into another vehicle for climate denial and dirty energy expansion. Please sign the petition to tell the World Bank to protect climate progress and reject Trump’s attacks. The petition to World Bank President Ajay Banga and the World Bank Board reads: Do not cave to political pressure from the Trump administration to weaken the World Bank’s climate commitments. Keep the 45% climate finance target, reject new fossil fuel expansion, preserve alignment with the Paris Agreement, and prioritize clean energy and climate resilience for vulnerable communities. The World Bank cannot fight poverty on a burning planet — climate action must remain central to its mission.
