Don’t Let Trump Block Climate Action at Sea

Donald Trump is once again standing in the way of global climate progress — this time by working to block international efforts to cut pollution from the shipping industry. World leaders can’t let Trump and his allies sabotage climate action on the high seas. The next meeting of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) must deliver bold commitments to decarbonize global shipping and hold major polluters accountable.

Shipping is one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions. If countries fail to act now, we’ll lock in decades of dirty, fossil-fueled ships that drive the climate crisis and threaten coastal communities worldwide. Trump’s attempt to undermine international cooperation would leave our planet paying the price — through stronger storms, rising seas, and worsening inequality.

We call on world leaders to stand together in defiance of Trump’s obstruction and commit to slashing shipping emissions in line with the 1.5°C climate target. The next IMO negotiations must deliver real progress: a binding global cap on emissions, strict new standards for ship efficiency, and a strong carbon price on maritime pollution.

Every nation that believes in a livable planet must make clear that the fossil fuel era is over — on land, in the air, and across our oceans. Countries should back ambitious domestic policies to phase out fossil-fueled vessels, invest in clean maritime technology, and support developing nations as they transition to zero-emission fleets.

Momentum for climate action at sea is growing. Major shipping companies, port cities, and climate advocates around the world are demanding change. Now it’s up to world leaders to show the courage to act — to rise above short-term politics, reject Trump’s fossil-fueled agenda, and chart a clean course for the future of global trade and our shared planet.
