Don't Let Texas Put a Bounty on Abortion

Texas lawmakers are on the verge of legalizing vigilante justice against anyone who helps someone get an abortion, even outside the state.

Senate Bill 2880, already passed by the Texas Senate, would let private citizens sue anyone who aids in accessing abortion care, slapping them with $100,000 penalties. Worse, it brings back a 1925 criminal abortion ban that could send people to prison for up to five years. Even more outrageous: the bill blocks Texas courts from reviewing whether it’s constitutional.

This is a chilling escalation in the war on reproductive rights. If it passes the Texas House, Texas will become the first state to punish its residents for obtaining legal abortions in other states.

Texas Republicans are hoping to create the blueprint for abortion bans everywhere, so all of us have a responsibility to hold them accountable.

Republicans want to trap Texans within their borders and threaten anyone who helps them with financial ruin or jail time. This is about control, plain and simple. It’s about stripping people — especially women and pregnant people — of their autonomy, their rights, and their dignity.

But there’s still time to stop it. The Texas House could vote on SB 2880 any day now. Lawmakers need to hear a deafening roar of public outrage.

Tell the Texas House: Reject SB 2880 and restore the rights of pregnant people. We will not stand by while you turn neighbors into bounty hunters and criminalize healthcare.
