Don't let Republicans Gut Animal Welfare laws!

Big Ag lobbyists and the factory farming industry want to gut state animal welfare laws and crush American family farmers to increase their massive corporate profits.

These big business interests added a provision to the House farm bill earlier this year that would override all state level animal cruelty laws. It would even re-legalize the mass slaughter of horses in the U.S. Our last chance to save animal protections is in the Senate.

If House Republicans and Ag lobbyists get their way, the farm bill would override state laws like a Massachusetts ban on the sale of products from farm animals held in extreme confinement and California's standards against cruelty. The Senate must reject this shameful corporate giveaway.

Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey called the proposal "a highly controversial and poisonous policy that ignores the will of the people." They added that the animal welfare laws under threat "were overwhelmingly supported by a popular vote — they shouldn’t be overridden because of big-dollar lobbying."

Researchers at Harvard Law's Animal Law and Policy Clinic wrote how extensive and undemocratic it would be for federal lawmakers to upend state level protections: "Congress would be overturning the results of democratic elections and devaluing animal welfare investments made by livestock producers across the country."

Congress must keep federal preemption of state animal protection laws OUT of the must-pass farm bill!
