Don’t Let Medicare Advantage Insurers Dump Seniors

Big Medicare Advantage insurers are getting billions more from taxpayers — and now they’re cutting plans and benefits to protect their profits.

UnitedHealthcare and Humana are shrinking their Medicare Advantage offerings for 2027, potentially forcing hundreds of thousands of seniors to find new coverage. People could lose access to doctors, benefits, and care they already depend on. Meanwhile, Medicare Advantage insurers are set to collect more than $13 billion in additional federal payments next year.

That’s outrageous. Insurance giants should not be allowed to take more taxpayer money while dumping seniors, shrinking benefits, and disrupting care when a plan no longer delivers the profits they want.

Tell Congress: Protect seniors from Medicare Advantage cuts now. Make sure patients can keep the doctors, medications, and ongoing care they already depend on.

Medicare Advantage was deeply broken before this latest round of cuts. For years, private insurers have faced scrutiny over massive overpayments, aggressive billing, restrictive provider networks, prior authorization roadblocks, and wrongful denials of care. The companies collect enormous sums from Medicare while seniors are forced to fight for the healthcare they were promised.

Congress has tolerated this broken system for far too long.

But seniors cannot wait for Washington to rebuild supplemental Medicare coverage from the ground up. If an insurance company abandons a plan or slashes benefits, someone undergoing cancer treatment, managing heart disease, or relying on a trusted specialist should not suddenly be thrown into chaos.

Congress must force federal regulators to protect patients now — guaranteeing continuity of care, preserving access to medications and ongoing treatments, and ensuring seniors can move to reliable coverage without gaps, penalties, or losing the doctors they trust.

Then lawmakers need to confront the larger scam by cracking down on Medicare Advantage fraud and abuse, ending incentives that reward insurers for gaming Medicare, and building a supplemental system that serves patients instead of padding corporate profits.

Seniors should not get less care, less choice, and less security while taxpayers keep writing bigger checks to insurance giants.
