Don’t Let Donald Trump Kill Clean Energy Innovation Efforts

Just this week, reports revealed that the Trump Administration is gutting the very office tasked with securing America’s clean energy future. The Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) — a cornerstone of our national effort to fight climate change and stay competitive with countries like China — is being defunded and dismantled. This outrageous move will destroy billions in clean energy investments, throw hundreds of experts out of work, and hand over America’s leadership in the next great industrial revolution to our rivals abroad. The stakes could not be higher — and we must act now.

Under the previous administration, Congress endowed OCED with nearly $27 billion to back first-of-a-kind, commercial-scale clean energy projects and technologies — from carbon capture and long-duration energy storage to low-carbon manufacturing of steel, cement, and chemicals. The Trump administration is now slashing its budget to zero, canceling billions in awards, and purging over three-quarters of its staff.

This senseless self-sabotage will leave the U.S. unable to lead the clean energy transition and set back climate progress for years to come. The climate crisis demands urgency: skyrocketing heat waves, extreme storms, floods, droughts, and rising sea levels are already taking lives and damaging infrastructure. Every year we delay is another year of worsening impacts.

Meanwhile, China and other global competitors are racing ahead in clean industrial capacity, clean manufacturing exports, and strategic control of green technology supply chains. By gutting OCED, we are handing them the leadership in the low-carbon economy we once pioneered.

Restoring OCED funding is not partisan or optional — it’s essential. Private investors and technology firms are eager to scale up clean innovations, but they require federal support to cross the “valley of death.”

Add your name to demand that the administration:

1: Reinstate OCED’s budget at or above $27 billion in FY 2026.

2: Resume all canceled OCED grants and commitments.

3: Rehire and restore OCED’s full workforce.

4: Ensure bipartisan oversight and accountability for clean energy progress.

For our climate, for American leadership, and for generations to come — the Trump Administration must fund OCED now. Please sign the petition to call on the administration to immediately restore and expand full funding for the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED). As one of the most promising engines for scaling U.S. climate innovation, OCED must not be defunded or dismantled — doing so would jeopardize America’s competitive edge and accelerate global climate disaster.
