Denounce Tennessee Republicans' Racist New Voting Map

Tennessee Republicans just carved up the state’s only majority-Black congressional district — and it deserves national condemnation.

Their new congressional map splits Memphis and Shelby County into three districts, diluting Black voting power and trying to wipe out Tennessee’s only Democratic-held congressional seat. 

It was rushed through a special session after Republicans repealed the state’s ban on mid-decade redistricting, all to lock in a 9-0 Republican congressional map before voters can stop them.

This fight is bigger than one district. If politicians can dismantle majority-Black representation whenever it threatens their power, no community’s voice is safe. The Voting Rights Act was created because lawmakers used tactics like this for generations to weaken Black political power. Tennessee Republicans are reviving that same playbook.

Black voters deserve fair representation. Memphis voters deserve to have their community kept whole. And Tennessee voters deserve elections where the people choose their representatives — not maps where politicians choose their voters.

We cannot let this attack on Black political power pass quietly. Public condemnation matters because silence gives cover to the politicians trying to normalize racial gerrymandering as ordinary partisan politics.
