Demand the Senate Reject the SAVE Act!

The SAVE Act is a voter suppression bill that could halt in-person voter registration drives and upend online voter registration. It also carries a criminal penalty for registering someone to vote who doesn’t show citizenship documentation. 

The legislation requires potential voters to present certain citizenship documentation when they register to vote or update their voter registration. This requires tens of millions of married people to produce additional documentation since they commonly adopt their spouse’s surname. Notably, the Brennan Center for Justice issued a report showing that 21 million Americans don’t have citizenship documents readily available. 

It’s already illegal for non-citizens to vote in federal elections; there is no need to pass a bill that will create a burden and turn citizens away from the ballot box. 

The SAVE Act passed the House with 5 Democrats voting for it, and it only needs 60 votes to pass the Senate. We must make sure that every Senate Democrat votes against this 21st-century poll tax.
